SILT (Summer Instructor Leadership Training)

SILT Orientation: Friday, June 10 (required)

Training days (required):

June 13 – June 30 / Monday – Thursday

(Fridays optional Jamboree surf day)

2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

(no program June 20 in recognition of Juneteenth)

location: TBD – varies depending on conditions, but typically Linda Mar or Ocean Beach

 

Camp support days (required):

July 11 – July 28 / Monday – Friday

8 am – 2 pm OR  12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

(no program week of July 4)

THE “SILT” PROGRAM IS AN ANNUAL LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM MADE UP OF A COHORT OF 10-15 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY PARTICIPATED WITH CITY SURF PROJECT. ALONG WITH RECEIVING AN INTERNSHIP STIPEND, SILT LEADERS WILL GAIN OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP SKILLS, LIFEGUARDING SKILLS, CPR/FIRST AID TRAINING, AND BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR JUNIOR MENTOR SURF INSTRUCTOR TEAM FOR SUMMER 2023.

What are the Qualifications?

  • Participated with City Surf Project at least once
  • Must be able to swim comfortably in the ocean
  • Must have some knowledge of/interest in surfing and surf equipment
  • Must be in high school grades 10th-12th, or class of 2023 (or equivalent age)
  • Must be familiar with the four pillars of City Surf Project

 

What is the Time Commitment?

Required – Orientation (Friday, June 10)

Required – Three Weeks of Training (12 daysJune 13 – June 30)

Required – Support 3 weeks of summer camp as a junior surf instructor (15 daysJuly 11 – July 28)

Strongly encouraged – SILT Surfari (July 29-30)

28 required days total (can miss up to 5 days maximum with no more than 2 of those days falling during training) in order to be eligible for the full stipend.
