Our Mission

We ensure Bay Area youth have equitable access to the ocean through surf instruction.

We use surfing as a vehicle to improve the health and well being of our youth and to engage them with our four core pillars.

Who We Serve

We serve five districts in San Francisco –
Bayview, Mission, Excelsior, Sunset, and Fillmore.

Lack of social services and strong partner organizations all play a part in where we choose to work. We focus on providing youth with their first exposure to the ocean.

If you’re in the Bay, you know that yesterday’s storm was no joke. So, we rolled with the punches, made a pivot, and took program to @calacademy! We highly recommend impromptu field trips filled with learning opportunities and vibrant marine life!

Let’s hear it for THE WOMXN! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Today is #InternationalWomensDay and one day is simply not enough to show the respect, appreciation, and admiration we have for all of the womxn, girls, and female-identifying humans in our lives. From professional surfers breaking down barriers and changing the lineup for the better, to the students who catch their first wave with us, to the dozens of staff, volunteers, and community members who lift us up and strengthen our mission on the daily. The mamas, the aunties, the grannies, the sisters, the friends, the partners, the supporters. THANK YOU for being here and for being you.

We present to you: THE CSP CANOE CLUB! 🛶 Under

We present to you: THE CSP CANOE CLUB! 🛶

Under the apprenticeship of our Equipment Manager, our alumni have been hard at work building our very own CSP canoe. It’s been a years-long dream in the making and our team is beyond stoked that it’s almost done! The canoe will enable us to expand and diversify recreation opportunities for our students, all while giving them a new way to connect with the ocean and each other. Not to mention giving us another way to get out on the water when the surf conditions are less than ideal!

To celebrate, we’re joining two other local organizations, Race to Zero Waste and Sea Hugger, for the Zero Waste Fest on Saturday, April 1st at Sports Basement and Crissy Field.

Here’s how you can be part of the CSP Canoe Club:

Major gratitude goes out to the many incredible volunteers who spent their Saturday with us, sharing about their careers and the paths that led them there with our students, alumni, and community. Thank you to each and every one of you for your dedication to supporting the growth and goals of our youth!

The sport of surfing has been and continues to be

The sport of surfing has been and continues to be shaped by surfers who are members of the black community. From Nick Galbadón to Mary Mills, to the teams at @texturedwaves, @black.surfers, and @blacksurfclubsc (and so many others!), black surfers around the world continue to not just surf and exist in beach culture but also advocate for others to take up space in local and global lineups. We are so fortunate to have many participants, staff members, board members, and volunteers from the black community helping to write City Surf Project history. To each of you, Happy Black History Month.

Equity in surf, access to the ocean, diversity in

Equity in surf, access to the ocean, diversity in the lineup—these are all core to CSP’s mission. From 2019-2022, @browngirlsurf and City Surf Project collaborated with a task force made up of members of the @coastalcommission, @pacificarecreation, and other Bay Area community members and allies for a historic win ensuring equitable access for nonprofits at Pacifica State Beach with the first ever CAPP program.

This article from @sfchronicle provides a deeper look into the fight for equal access for equity-focused surf nonprofits at Linda Mar, a beloved surf spot just down the coast from San Francisco.

Over the last several years, Brown Girl Surf and CSP have collaborated to call attention to the many obstacles that create barriers to access for people of color and low-income surf students. We are grateful for everyone who has played a role in the effort to create a more equitable permitting system for surf schools, including both for-profit organizations and nonprofit organizations like CSP, and look forward to continued progress and ocean access for ALL.
